Event began 46 years ago and hosted teams from around the world

For Immediate Release
October 26, 2017

The Canada International Tuna Cup Challenge celebrated its 46th birthday in style as 10 teams competed for the 2017 title. Team Pescatours from Spain were crowned the Champions along with their Captain Troy Bruce of Bruce Brothers Tuna Charters!

The Pink Lumberjacks of the Sea (Montreal, QC) and Captain Kurt Harris (Tony’s Tuna Fishing) were the first runners up in trying to defend their 2016 title.

The 2017 roster of anglers come from a diverse area once again this year, including France, Spain, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto, Saint John, and of course from PEI as well!

The Cup got underway on Wednesday evening with an opening reception and then the teams enjoyed three full days of tuna fishing! The event concluded on Saturday evening with the closing Dinner & Awards Banquet where the hardware was handed out.

The Canada International Tuna Cup Challenge works with the PEI Tuna Charter Association to ensure rules and regulations adhere to the Standardized Catch & Release Plan for Atlantic Bluefin Tuna as outlined by Fisheries & Oceans Canada. Each team was permitted to catch and release 2 tunas per day (6 in total for the event). Points are assigned based on 100 points for each fish landed and released and one point per inch in length. The winner shall be the team with this most points over the 3 days.

The 2017 Canada International Tuna Cup Challenge was presented by Costa Sunglasses and Big Rock Sports and was sponsored by: Milligan’s Fisheries/Westmoreland Fisheries, Irving Oil, Souris Credit Union, Vernon D’Eon Lobster Plugs, Quinn’s Marine, Mermaid Marine, Souris Home Hardware, Atlantic Electronics, Bradley Handrahan, Provincial Boat & Marine Ltd and the Town of Souris. The event was also funded by Innovation PEI, Tourism PEI and PEI Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
